UPCOMING FOR THEATRE ARCHIPELAGO

Theatre Archipelago (hereafter TA) was founded by Rhoma Spencer and is a registered nonprofit arts organization with charitable status established on November 9th 2004. Since its inception, TA has conducted workshops, staged readings, and produced and co-produced four plays. It has also participated in Caribana 2006 and co-presented a choral group from Tobago.

TA’s earliest presentations were two readings of Derek Walcott’s The Haitian Earth. The first one was held as a hurricane relief fundraiser for Haiti in November 2004. The success of this reading led to an invitation by the University of Toronto’s New College to restage the reading for an international forum on Haiti in March 2005.

In April 05, TA collaborated with Obsidian Theatre Company and b current to present a public reading of Tony Hall’s Twilight Café, and a two day master workshop with Mr. Hall, a Trinbagonian playwright, director and filmmaker.

TA’s inaugural production of Mad Miss/Just Jazz performed to critical acclaim in May 2005, and Mad Miss was invited to perform at an international conference on Caribbean Literature at Ryerson University in July 2005.

In the fall of 2005, TA collaborated with the Lordstreet Theatre Company, based in Trinidad and Tobago, to present the internationally acclaimed hit play, Jean and Dinah, in Edmonton and Toronto, and with Jang Arts and Entertainment to present Signal Hill Alumni Choir of Tobago in two successful performances in Toronto.

The 2006 season saw TA collaborating with b current to produce Fallen Angel and the Devil Concubine. This collaboration garnered three Dora nominations: one for outstanding male actor, one for set design, and one for costume design.

The 06-07 season saw TA participating for the first time as a guest band at the 2006 Toronto Carnival (Caribana) with a presentation entitled “Cote ci Cote la”- An Ole Mas presentation. Our main stage production of Twilight Café completed our season. The play was a critical success and garnered a Dora nomination for outstanding actor.
